The Beauty of the Slain Lamb
“He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him” (Isaiah 53:2).
The recruiting agencies responsible to find specific people with the right look and dexterity to star in commercials, movies, beauty contests, fashion magazines have been torturing the weak minds of our youth by convincing them that without ‘good looks’ and ‘good brains’ their chance of success will be zero to none. This contagious prejudice has done such a good job at convincing most people that true beauty begins with one’s physical appearance which, in some cases, is a prerequisite for inner or heart beauty.
According to most human standards, a less beautiful person is evil while a more beautiful one is good. This man-made analogy of beauty, which is in sharp and obvious contrast with the Holy Word, has been disproven during a live TV broadcast in the spring of 2009 when Susan Boyle held the well-known microphone of Britain’s Got Talent. If you follow these links [ youtube video 1] [ youtube video 2] you will analyze all the negative presuppositions of some of the audience members; however (I repeat) however, at the sound of her larynx, the entire audience, including the judges, were instantaneously blown away by the unexpected charming melody. As a matter of fact, Susan Boyle received a standing ovation. Listen carefully to the opening remarks of the judging panel. Everyone was bluffed by a physical appearance that does not represent the beauty of a star. “ God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong” (1 Corinthians 1:27).
The same way Susan was praised, not for her physical appearance, but for her God-given vocal chords Jesus was praised not for his ‘tender shoot’ appearance, as Isaiah tells us, but for HIS person and works. It’s easy to be drawn to and accept the external beauty of a person but it is another to pair up heart beauty with a physically unattractive person whose titles are King of the Jews, King of kings, The Begotten Son, The Everlasting Lord, The Great Shepherd, The Alpha and the Omega etc. Why wasn’t JESUS the most attractive JEW? JESUS would be disqualified from a beauty contest not in the first round but during His audition. Even though our Savior wasn’t handsome enough to win a beauty contest yet HE was the true impeccable and unchallenged representation of beauty in the flesh.
If there were a heart beauty contest no would stand a chance against the Son of Man. We can now realize that all these posters and images of JESUS that bring revenues of billions of dollars are all false representations of His ‘true look.’ Maybe if some of us were to see Emmanuel face to face we could have rejected Him because of His unattractiveness.
Christ’s beauty came from His unnatural way of living His own Law through every street of every village within every city in which everyone of HIS foot prints left memories of love and hope.
-
HE rejected no human beings (Luke 5:30)
-
HE stood for justice (John 8:11)
-
HE healed at no cost (Matthew 8: 2,5,14,16; 9: 2,20,27; 12:9 15:21; 17:14; 20:30; Mark 7:31; 8:22; Luke 13:11; 14:1; 17:11; 22:51; John 4:46; 5:1; 9:1)
-
HE ran from stardom and popularity (John 7:3-6)
-
HE noticed everyone’s need (Luke 19:5)
-
HE hung around sinners [prostitutes, tax collectors, blind persons, criminals, orphans, adulterers, the needy etc.] (Matthew 9:10).
Even those who despised and rejected Him couldn’t resist the attracting force of the Messiah’s unconditional love marinated with wisdom and humility. Need I list anymore? Jesus emptied Himself of Heaven’s luxury and glory, stepped through the muddy, dusty, and sinful streets of earth, was tempted in all things as the Second Adam (Hebrews 4:15), died the Second Death, and uttered words of promises for His Second Coming (John 145: 1-4) in order to redefine beauty. A beauty which resounded through every spoken word of forgiveness and hope, every deed, every miracle, every rebuke, every parable, every confirmation of all foretold prophecies, every tear drop, every question, even unto the shameful cross of Calvary where HE was crucified naked before the entire world for the entire world (John 19: 23-24).
-
HIS compassion never failed, His patience never ran out, His desire to save every human being was never secondary but primary (John 3:16; Luke 19:10)
-
HIS authority never overcame His humility (Matthew 21: 23-27)
-
HIS subordination to His Father was never hidden (John 5:36; 8:42)
-
HIS respect for governing authority was never compromised, His enthusiasm for children superseded that of their parents (Matthew 19:13-14)
-
HIS genuineness was never questioned, His selflessness was the catalyst that stimulated many to become HIS disciples
-
HIS identity never called for proof (Mark 1:24, John 3:2)
-
HIS exemplary sincerity always suppressed the doubt of the crowd
-
HIS charisma always subdued the broken hearted
-
HIS power never failed to cast out demonic forces (Matthew 8:28; 9:32; 12:22; Mark 1:23).
These attributes were never demonstrated for self-glorification but for HIS Father’s glory. ALL THAT BEAUTY BLOOMED OUT DESPITE THE FACT THAT JESUS WAS PENNILESS. Money can’t buy nor build up nor replace ‘heart beauty.’
This is the backstage beauty that will arrest
the attention of the world!
